Diagnosis: dorsal finrays 15 (14-16); anal finrays 19 (18-20, rarely 17) pectoral finrays 14 (13-15). Gillrakers 4 + 1 + 10 (rarely 9 or 11), total 15 (rarely 14 or 16). AO 9 (8-10) + 8 (7-9), total 17 (16-18, rarely 15). Size: to 200 mm.

Habitat: high-oceanic, mesopelagic: day at 550-750 m; night at 40-550 m (maximum abundance at 75 m (juveniles)). Food: no data. Reproduction: size at sexual maturity unknown; female of 200 mm was gravid.

Distribution: Atlantic: bitemperate pattern, between 32° and 65° N and in Mauritanian upwelling region; and in South Atlantic in the region of the Subtropical Convergence. Elsewhere: circumglobal in the southern hemisphere in the region of Subtropical Convergence, but with northern extensions to about 18° S in eastern boundary currents.
