Diagnosis: North Atlantic population: dorsal finrays 13 (14); anal finray 19 (20, rarely 18); pectoral finrays 15-16 (rarely 17). Gillrakers 4 + 1 + 9 (rarely 8), total 14 (rarely 13). AO 7 (6-8) + 9 (8-10), total 16 (15) South Atlantic population: dorsal finrays 14-15 (rarely 13 or 16); ana finrays 20 (19-21, rarely 22); pectoral finrays 16 (17, rarely 15). Gillraker 4 + 1 + 9 (rarely 8 or 10), total 14 (rarely 13 or 15). AO 7 (6-9) + 9 (8-10, rarely 11), total 16 (15-17). Size: to 138 mm.

Habitat: high-oceanic, mesopelagic. Canaries: day at 700 m and deeper night upper 150 m. Bermuda: day at 700-950 m (maximum abundanc, at 700-850 m); night at 100-350 m (maximum abundance at 100-150 m) Some small juveniles may be non-migratory. Food: no data. Reproduction: sexually mature from about 84 mm (North Atlantic); size at sexual maturity in South Atlantic unknown. Spawning throughout the year with peak in winter early spring (Bermuda).

Distribution: Atlantic: subtropical pattern (bisubtropical subpattern) between 28° and 40° N and between 28° S and Subtropical Convergenc (western sector); and between 20° and 34° N and between 13° S and Subtropical Convergence (eastern sector). Elsewhere: Indian Ocean (two specimens recorded between 25° and 36° S) and Pacific (west of New Caledonia, Tasman Sea, north of New Zealand and (?) from off Chile, between 31° and 34° S).
