Diagnosis: dorsal finrays 14-15 (16); anal finrays 14 (13); pectoral finrays 15-17. Gillrakers 4 + 1 + 9 (8-10), total 14 (13-15). AO 5-6 (4) + 2, total 7-8 (6). Size. to 200 mm.

Habitat: high-oceanic, mesopelagic: day at 550-1,000 m; night at 60-225 m (maximum abundance at 100-150 m). Food: no data. Reproduction: size at sexual maturity unknown.

Distribution: Atlantic endemic subspecies: subtropical pattern (north subtropical subpattern), between 21° and 40° N (western sector) and between 24° and 43° N (eastern sector). Elsewhere: Pacific (nominate subspecies) between 25° and 42° N from California to Hawaii.

Eggs, larvae and young stages. No data.
