Diagnosis: dorsal finrays 14 (13-15); anal finrays 14 (13-15); pectoral finrays 14 (13-15, rarely 16). Gillrakers 6-7 + 1 + 13 (12-14, rarely 11 or 15), total 19-22 (rarely 23). AO 6-7 (5, rarely 8 or 9) + 3 (2-5), total 10 (8-11, rarely 7 or 12). Size: to 153 mm.

Habitat: high-oceanic, mesopelagic: day at 475-950 m (maximum abundance at 800 m); night at 60-750 m (maximum abundance at 100 m). Food: no data. Reproduction: size at sexual maturity unknown.

Distribution: Atlantic: bitemperate pattern, generally between 35° and 45° N and between 35° and 48° S, but in eastern sector as expatriates between 51° and 66° N, and isolates south to about Madeira and north to St. Helena. Elsewhere: southern Indian and Pacific Oceans.

Eggs, larvae and young stages. No data.
