Diagnosis: dorsal finrays 11 (10); anal finrays 18 (17-19); pectoral finrays 15 (14). AO 6 (4-6) + 10 (8-11), total 16 (14-17). Males with 5-6 (rarel 4 or 7) separate black-rimmed luminous organs supra-caudally; female with 45 (rarely 3 or 6) separate oval organs infra-caudally. Size: to 5 mm.

Habitat: high-oceanic, mesopelagic: day at 375-650 m (maximum abund ance at 500 m); day at 600-701 m (Berrnuda); nyctoepipelagic at surfac and down to 200 m. Food: no data. Reproduction: caudal glands develop in males at 19 mm and in females at 23 mm; sexually mature from about 34 mm. Spawning peak late winter early spring (Bermuda).

Distribution: Atlantic: broadly tropical pattern (holo-eurytropical sub-pattern), between about 30° and 14° N and between 2° and 14° (eastern sector) and between 2° and 36° S (western sector). Elsewhere Indian Ocean between 8° and 34° S and Pacific Ocean off Chile an off New Zealand.
