Diagnosis: dorsal finrays 13 (12-14); anal finrays 13 (12-14); pectoral finrays 13 (12-14). Gillrakers 4 (rarely 3 or 5) + 1 + 1 1(10 12), total 16 (15-17, rarely 18). AO 6 (5-7) + 4 (3), total 10 (9-11). Sexually mature females with one pair of sausage-shaped and one pair of circular luminous patches supra-orbitally. Size: to 45 mm.

Habitat: high-oceanic, mesopelagic. Canaries: day at 500-700 m; night at 25-300 m. Bermuda: 601-900 m (maximum abundance at 651-700 m); night at 51-250 m (maximum abundance at 101-150 m). Size stratification with depth both day and night. During January-February and August- September juveniles ( < 20 mm) non- migratory (Bermuda). Food: no data. Reproduction: sexually mature from about 31 mm. Spawning commences in spring, to reach a peak in early summer (Bermuda).

Distribution: Atlantic: subtropical pattern (bisubtropical subpattern) between 21° and 40° N and between 20° and 40° S (western sector); and between 20° and 40° N, with isolates to 50° N, and between about 20° and 40° S (eastern sector). Indian Ocean: between 20° and 45° S.

Eggs, larvae and young stages. No data.
