Diagnosis: body very elongate, its depth at least 10 times in SL. Head about 4 times in SL; snout long, about 3 times eye and more than half head length; nostril far back, behind tip of upper jaw; two series of teeth on lower jaw and palatines, the outer fixed, the inner flexible; gillrakers tooth-like, on bony bases. Dorsal fin small, well behind midpoint of body, with 10 finrays; small adipose dorsal fin near tail; pectoral finrays 11-12; pelvic fins a little before dorsal fin origin, with 9 finrays; anal fin far back, with 29-31 finrays and an adipose fin in front to anus. Lateral line scales 63-64. Vertebrae 76-79. Colour: more or less crowded chromatophores of various sizes, with strong pigmentation on pelvic fins, snout tip and some other areas. Size: to 18.7 cm.
Habitat: mesopelagic. Food: no data. Reproduction: no data.
Distribution: Madeira. Elsewhere, a single South Atlantic record and one record from Indian Ocean.
