Diagnosis: body moderately elongate, its depth about 8-12 times in SL. Head 3.5-4.5 times in SL; upper jaw distinctly shorter than snout, its tip more than twice lenght of next longest. Dorsal fin well behind midpoint 14-15; pelvic fins a little before dorsal fins origin, with 9 finrays; anal fin far back, with 22-24 finrays. Lateral line scales 59-61. Vertebrea 67-73. Colour: brownish, lighter below. Size: to 30 cm.
Habitat: meso- to bethypelagic over deep waters, juveniles epi- to mesopelagic. Food: carnivorous; fishes, occasionally planktonic organisms. Reproduction: continuous from March to September in temperate waters.
Distribution: northward to the Arctic Circle, but absent from Baltic; western Mediterranean. Elsewhere, southward to the Canaries; also western Atlantic.
