Diagnosis: body moderately elongate, its depth about 5-9 times in SL. Head about 4 times in SL; upper jaw about equal to snout, its tip distinctly behind nostril; gillrakers present, about 10 on each bony base, the longest about twice the length of next longest. Dorsal fin well behind midpoint of body, with 10-12 finrays; adipose dorsal fin near tail; pectoral finrays 16-17; pelvic fins below dorsal fin origin, with 9 finrays anal fin far back, with 22-24 finrays. Lateral line scales 53-57. Vertebrae 64-67. Colour: brownish, lighter below; 5-10 peritoneal sections in young. Size: known to 19.4 cm.

Habitat: meso- to bathypelagic, to below 1,000 m; young individuals near surface, larger individuals at greater depths. Food: carnivorous; small fishes and crustaceans. Reproduction: throughout year in tropical and subtropical waters.

Distribution: tropical and subtropical waters. Elsewhere, other tropical and subtropical parts of Atlantic, also Indian Ocean, around Philippines and South China Sea. Adults are known only from the Atlantic.
