Diagnosis: body very slender, its depth more than 16 times in SL. Head about 5-6 times in SL; snout pointed, about half head length; no gillrakers. Dorsal fin short, set well back on body, with 11-13 finrays; pectoral finrays 11; pelvic fins well before dorsal fin origin, with 9 finrays; anal fin far back on body, with 25-27 finrays. Anus behind pelvic fin tips. Body naked except for lateral line scales (89-96). Vertebrae 94-98. Colour: black; juveniles not known. Size: to 46.1 cm.

Habitat: meso- to bathypelagic. Food: no data. Reproduction: no data.

Distribution: off Madeira. Elsewhere, two records to south of the Canaries.

Eggs, larvae and young stages. No data.
Otoliths (sagitta). No data.
