Diagnosis: dorsal finrays 11-13, anal finrays 30-35. Vertebrae 48-52. Colour: in alcohol, a solid dark brown. Size: to 123.1 mm SL.

Habitat: oceanic, mesopelagic; most adults (over 50 mm) taken in hauls to depths exceeding 400 m, but often in hauls to depths of 100-400 m. Larvae (under 30 mm SL) and small juveniles frequently taken in the upper 100 m and often in the upper 50 m. Larvae and small juveniles taken throughout the year. Food: other midwater fishes. Reproduction: no data.

Distribution: the capture of an adult specimen at 26° 20' N, 19° 21' W suggests that this species may occur within the Clofnam area. Elsewhere tropical and subtropical zones of all oceans.
