Diagnosis: snout to origin of dorsal fin 20.0-22.5% TL, of anal fin 23.0-27.5% TL, and of dorsolateral white lines 1.9-2.7% TL. Pectoral finrays 37-39. No dorsolateral filaments on trunk, 5-19 on tail, the two longest 77-85% TL behind snout. Caudal organ moderately expanded with 20-30 slender filaments and with anterior series of isolated spots of photogenic tissue. Colour: black. Size: to 107 cm TL.

Habitat, Food and Reproduction: probably as in S. ampullaceus.

Distribution: three records south of Madeira. Elsewhere, one record from south of the Canaries and one from the western North Atlantic.
