Diagnosis: snout to origin of dorsal fin 14.5-21.5% TL, of anal fin 18.0-24.0% TL, and of dorsolateral white lines 1.6-3.0% TL. Pectoral finrays 34-39. No dorsolateral filaments on trunk, a single, short on tail, 83-89% TL behind snout. Caudal organ lanceolate, pointed with dorsal and ventral angular expansions, without filaments and with anterior series of isolated spots of photogenic tissue. Colour: black. Size: to 166 cm TL.

Habitat, Food and Reproduction: probably as in S. ampullaceus.

Distribution: two records in south-eastern part of Clofnam area. Elsewhere, one in western North Atlantic and one at 10° South in the Atlantic.
