Diagnosis: body oval, hind part tapering. Upper eye its own diameter or more from dorsal profile of head. Anterior nostril on blind side not enlarged; anterior nostril on eyed side with a backward-pointing tube not reaching front border of lower eye. Dorsal fin beginning on anterior profile of head, with 79-83 finrays; pectoral fins with 6-10 finrays; anal finrays 57-67; caudal fin confluent with dorsal and anal fins (broadly joined by a membrane). Lateral line with 100-123 pored scales, the supra-temporal branch forming a smoothly rounded curve. Colour: eyed side greyish- brown, with blackish blotches tending to form longitudinal series, the largest blotches along the lateral line. Size: to 35 cm SL.
Habitat: demersal on mud and sand in shallow waters, from the shore to 60 m. Food: no data. Reproduction: no data.
Distribution: eastern Atlantic (southward from Gibraltar) and Mediterranean (coast of Spain). Elsewhere, southward to Congo.
Eggs larvae and young stages. No data.
