Diagnosis: body oval. Fleshy lobe of snout well developed. Upper eye more than its diameter from dorsal profile of head. Anterior nostril on blind side enlarged, rosette-shaped, separated from posterior nostril; anterior nostril on eyed side with a backward-pointing tube. Dorsal fin beginning on the anterior head in front of the inter-ocular space, with 67-76 finrays; pectoral fin on eyed side with 9 finrays, on blind side almost equally developed; anal fin with 54-61 finrays; caudal fin joined to last dorsal and anal finrays by a low membrane. Lateral line with 113-175 pored scales, the supra-temporal branch forming a smoothly rounded curve. Colour: eyed side dark brown, densely marked with numerous more or less diffuse blackish spots; pectoral fin on eyed side with a central dark spot not ringed with white. Size: to 20 cm SL.

Habitat: benthic on sand in shallow waters. Food: no data. Reproduction: no data.

Distribution: Mediterranean (north central basin). Elsewhere, Black Sea and Sea of Azov.
