Diagnosis: eyes on left side of body; mouth strongly arched downward; strong teeth on vomer. Lower gillrakers on first arch 11-12. Dorsal finrays 64-72; anal finrays 44-48. Lateral line scales 35-39, anterior part of line strongly curved over pectoral fins. Colour: eyed side brownish, with a conspicuous black spot at bases of posterior dorsal and anal finrays; fins often with dark spots. Size: to about 25 cm SL.
Habitat: benthic on continental shelf. Food: no data. Reproduction: no data.
Distribution: Mediterranean, also eastern Atlantic from Portugal southward to Morocco. Elsewhere, southward along West African coast to Angola.
Eggs, larvae and young stages. No data.
