Diagnosis: body oblong, moderately compressed. 2 fixed and 1 or 2 movable fang-like teeth in upper jaw anteriorly, no fang-like teeth in lower jaw; vomer toothed. D XII-XIII + I + 14-15, anterior 5 or 6 spines more elongated, closely spaced; A II + 16-18; pectoral fins long, almost reaching anal fin origin. Shape and size of scales highly variable. Lateral line running along upper contour of body to below middle of second dorsal fin. Lateral line scales with open tubes. Colour: brownish. Size: to 23 cm SL.
Habitat: oceanic, mesopelagic at 100 to 600 m; also over continental slope and underwater rises. Food: crustaceans, squids, small fishes. Reproduction: no data.
Distribution: known from Madeira and off Spain. Elsewhere probably worldwide in tropical and subtropical seas: tropical Atlantic, Gulf of Mexico, Indian Ocean, Arafura Sea, off New Caledonia and Nazca underwater ridge.
