Diagnosis: in each jaw, 8 incisors (light brownish coloured), 2 (3) series of molars at back of jaws; 1 row of molars just behind incisors, gillrakers 12-14 lower, 6-9 upper. D X-XI + 13-15; A III + 13-16. Lateral line scales 48-54 to caudal base. Colour: silvery grey, head darker; dark saddle on the caudal peduncle; dark spot at the origin of lateral line; dark longitudinal stripe along middle of sides; small dark spot more or less shaded at the upper pectoral axil; juveniles with 5 large transverse dark stripes. Size: to 30 cm SL, usually 15 cm.
Habitat: inshore waters (O-100 m), more common at 30-50 m on various bottoms. Gregarious. Food: carnivorous (benthic molluscs and crustaceans). Reproduction: April-June.
Distribution: Atlantic from southern coast of Spain (Cadiz) to Cape Verde Is.; absent off oceanic islands. Also Mediterranean coast of Spain at Malaga (Reina et al., 1982).
