Diagnosis: dorsal finrays XI + 13-15; anal finrays III + 12-13. Lower gillrakers on anterior arch 19-23. Lateral line scales 54-62. Colour: many alternate blue and yellow lines along the sides. Size: to 90 cm SL, usually to 40 cm.

Habitat: over rocks or corals and among floating sargassum. Food: chiefly algae. Reproduction: no data.

Distribution: one record from off Madeira. Elsewhere, in the tropical and subtropical Atlantic.
