Diagnosis: head 3.2-3.4 in standard length. Eye large 3.4-3.7 in head. Mouth large, oblique, chin prominent; snout short with a prominent swelling on tip, equal to or less than eye diameter. Gillrakers 20-22 on lower arm. Dorsal fin continuous, with 13 spines and 15 soft rays; anal fin with 3 spines and 7 rays. Scales fairly small, 55-58 pores in lateral line. Colour: uniform brown above, silvery below. Size: to 36 cm SL.

Habitat: coastal waters in depths up to 100 m on sand, muddy sand or rocky bottoms. Food: bottom invertebrates. Reproduction: no data.

Distribution: Atlantic coast from the Canaries to Gibraltar; doubtful in Mediterranean. Elsewhere, along West Africa southward to Angola.
