Diagnosis: upper jaw with 6-9 teeth in inner and 20-34 teeth in outer row, Iower jaw with 7-10 teeth in inner and 18-31 teeth in outer row. Dorsal finrays XI-XIII + 22-25; anal finrays I + 22-25; pectoral finrays 10-11; vertebrae 35-40. Gill filaments on section of first arch attached to opercle. Colour: black. Size: to 26 cm SL.

Habitat: bathypelagic, most adults caught at depths exceeding 1,500 m. Food: no data. Reproduction: no data.

Distribution: three localities off Madeira. Elsewhere in tropical-subtropical parts of all oceans.

Eggs, larvae and young stages. No data.
