Diagnosis: teeth smaller and weaker but arranged exactly as in C. niger. Head 23-27% of SL, snout 27-30% of head, inter-orbital 21-23% of head. Spine at lower angle of preoperculum weak. Dorsal finrays XI-XIII + 26-30; anal finrays I + 27-29. Colour: blackish-brown. Size: up to 15 cm SL.

Habitat: bathypelagic, most captures below 750 m. Food: no data. Reproduction: no data.

Distribution: from off Portugal. Elsewhere, in most of Atlantic Ocean. Quite common in South Atlantic based on unpublished Walther Herwig material.

Eggs, larvae and young stages. No data.
Otoliths (sagitta). No data.
