Diagnosis: Dl VI; D2 I + 9; A II + 9; P 20; V I + 5, reaching the anal fin. Scales much longer than high. Colour: about 20 transverse black lines on sides; chromatophores very numerous on caudal peduncle; soft dorsal and anal fins distally dark; pelvic fins black. Size: to 5-6 cm SL.

Habitat: probably pelagic. Food: no data. Reproduction: no data.

Distribution: known only from the Strait of Messina (Sicily).

Note. After the type (now lost), only a single specimen of this recently validated species has been studied. The body appears to be more elongate than in M. coccoi, the eye is smaller and the opercular spine is shorter.
