Diagnosis: diameter of eye equal to snout. Dorsal finrays 92-105; anal finrays 77-88; pectoral finrays 27-31; pelvic finray 1. Indistinct lateral line. Colour: greyish; mouth, gill cavity and peritoneum black; dorsal and anal fins black-edged. Size: to about 250 mm SL.

Habitat: rather common on the continental slope from 235 to 1,570 m. Food: no data. Reproduction: oviparous.

Distribution: off the Azores. Elsewhere, from 40° N southward along the African coast to 10° S (off Angola).

Eggs, larvae and young stages. No data.
Otoliths (sagitta). No data.
