Diagnosis: Iong and slender body; head 5.3-8.5 times in SL. Dorsal finrays 119-134; anal finrays 98-108. Colour: light. Size: to about 800 mm SL.

Habitat: meso- and upper bathypelagic in tropical waters; its light colour may indicate a less deep occurrence than the other two species. Food: no data. Reproduction: oviparous.

Distribution: five specimens from the area: 48°30' N, 18° W; 36°48.5' N, 10°12' W; 34°06' N, 08°02' W; 2 specimens off Madeira. Elsewhere from off Cape Verde Is., tropical west Atlantic and off South Africa.

Note. Perhaps not distinct from B. nigra according to Cohen (1974: 143).
