Diagnosis: eel-like, anus behind pectoral fin base; head 1/9-1/11 TL; upper profile of head convex; pigmented eye diameter greater than or equal to 16% head length; pectoral fin three-fifths head length; predorsal bone present. Maxilla extends well behind orbit. Fang-like teeth at jaw symphyses. 42-45 dorsal finrays; 47-49 anal finrays anterior to thirty-first vertebra. Lateral line pores present. 25-29 precaudal vertebrae. Colour: reddish with silvery abdomen, operculum and iris; dark markings on head and median edges. Size: to 300 mm TL.

Habilat: free-living, fairly deep (to 200 m). Food: assumed to feed on small invertebrates and fish, as do other free-living and commensalmembers of the family. Reproduction: no data.

Distribution: coasts of the British Isles, southern Norway, western Denmark.
