Diagnosis: dorsal finrays 91-107; anal finrays 74-87; pectoral finrays 22-29. Becomes ripe at a relatively large size. Size: to about 650 mm.

Habitat: trawled at depths between 1,050 and 2,830 m. Food: no data. Reproduction: viviparous.

Distribution: recorded from the western Mediterranean and from a few localities in the north-eastern Atlantic. Elsewhere, along the coast of West Africa to the Cape of Good Hope and probably in the Gulf of Mexico.

Note - Other genera included in this family: Oculospinus, Oligopus.

Eggs, larvae and young stages. No data.
Otoliths (sagitta). No data.
