Diagnosis: body very elongate, round in Cross-section, its depth 3.54.5% TL at anal origin, and covered with scales, but unpaired fins naked; bony plates at bases of dorsal and anal fins (but not before dorsal fin origin). Head length 13-15% TL; mouth ventral, surrounded by prominent pores. Predorsal distance 18-21% TL, origin of fin over last third of pectoral fin; preanal distance 24-28% TL. Lateral line double, with ventral and midlateral branches. Colour: uniformly dark, greyish-brown; peritoneum dark. Size: to 30 cm.
Habitat: benthic on muddy bottoms at 350-1,836 m, with temperatures below 0°C. Food: small crustaceans (Themisto, Podocerus, Hemilamprops). Reproduction.:no data.
Distribution: Greenland and Norwegian seas, from north of Iceland to Jan Mayen I. and south to Faroe Channel, also from south-west of Spitsbergen.
