Diagnosis: body fairly elongate, its depth about 13% TL at anal origin, covered with scales up to origin of dorsal fin, but belly and unpaired fins naked. Upper angle of operculum with an elongate lobe. Pectoral finrays 23, the fin large (length 16-17% TL); preanal distance about 48% TL. Lateral line single, midlateral. Colour: dark with 5-6 light cross-bars, a light transverse curved forward bar on nape; peritoneum presumed brown to black. Size: 37 and 49 cm (only 2 known specimens).

Habitat: benthic on muddy bottoms at 839 and 1,098 m, with bottom temperatures -1.0 °C. Food: a Cottunculus sp. and another fish recorded in stomach of the holotype. Reproduction.: no data.

Distribution: off north-western Spitsbergen and in the Faroes Channel.
