Diagnosis: body very elongate, its depth about 4-5% TL at anal origin, covered with scales except on anterior part of breast and on back before, dorsal fin. Dorsal fin origin over middle of pectoral fin; the latter about 8% TL; preanal distance about 26-30% TL. Lateral line double, with midlateral (often indistinct) and ventral branches. Vertebrae 126. Colour: uniformly dark brownish; peritoneum black. Size: to 20 cm SL.

Habitat: benthic on muddy bottoms at 350-1700 m, with temperatures below O °C. Food: small crustaceans. Reproduction: no data.

Distribution: Norwegian and Greenland seas and from Spitsbergen south to the Faroes. Elsewhere, northern part of Kara Sea.

Eggs, larvae and young stages. No data.
