Diagnosis: body slender, elongate, its depth 7-9% SL at anal origin. Dorsal fin origin over front part of pectoral fin; base of latter 2.1-2.5 times in fin length. Vertebrae 96-102, no predorsal bones. Colour: variable, usually light with numerous dark cross-bands; dorsal fin often with several bluish-black ocelli; anal fin dark in males, but not in females. Size: to 30 cm, usually 12-15 cm.

Habitat: benthic on grey mud and sand bottoms in shallow water down to 1O0 m, with bottom temperatures below O °C and salinities over 30°/oo (over 27°/oo in Laptev Sea). Food: no data. Reproduction: probably autumn; eggs few (30-40), about 3 mm diameter.

Distribution: circumpolar in Arctic seas, northern part of Bering Sea; absent in White Sea.
