Diagnosis: see genus. Dl VI (V-VI); D2 I + 11; A I + 9 (7-10); P 17 (16-18). Scales in lateral series 32-34 (29-38). Vertebrae 27 (26-27). Colour. brownish body with 6-9 vertical dark bars down sides; oblique pale stripe from anterior nape across opercle and pectoral base, with dark rear edge, on pectoral fin, deeply emarginate in lower part. Size: 3 to 5.5 cm .

Habitat: inshore, to 3 m; lagoons and intertidal pools; under stones, among algae and sea-grass. Food: no data. Reproduction: early July (Messina). Eggs elongate, 1.8 x 0.53 mm, recorded from underside of red alga Gracilaria confervoides; post-larvae hatch at 2.76 mm, after about 7 days.

Distribution: Mediterranean.
