Diagnosis: lateral line system with sub-orbital row a having 2 transverse rows; row b ending anteriorly below rear edge of eye; transverse rows beneath row b, including cp, not extending below row d; head canals with pores w and d. Eyes lateral. Branchiostegal membrane attached to entire side of isthmus. Predorsal area and breast naked. Pelvic disc anterior membrane with more or less straight rear edge. Caudal fin slightly emarginate. Dl VI (VI-VII); D2 I + 10 (9-11); A I + 9-10 (8-10); P 18 (17-20). Scales in lateral series 41-44 (38-46). Vertebrae 31.
Colour: reddish-orange (fawn preserved) with large spot at base of caudal fin, males with numerous vertical dark bars down sides and dark rear spot on first dorsal fin; females with 3 or 4 bars, all descending below lateral midline. Size: to 4 cm.

Habitat: inshore, possibly neritic above sea-bed. Food: no data. Reproduction: no data.

Distribution: western basin of Mediterranean (Isola Giglio) and
Adriatic.

Eggs, larvae and young stages. No data.
