Diagnosis: nape scaled completely, scales cycloid. Head depth 0.8-0.9 width. Inter-orbit about three-quarters eye diameter. Angle of jaws below anterior edge of eye. Snout 1.4-1.6 orbit. Upper lip very inflated posteriorly, width 1.25-1.5 lateral preorbital area. Pelvic disc about half abdomen length, anterior membrane with large, angular, lateral lobes, about one-third to almost half width of rear edge. Caudal peduncle depth at least three-quarters own length. Dl VI; D2 I + 16-18; A I + 11-14. Scales in lateral series 60-69. Colour: grey to ochreous, with paler spots on head and numerous small spots on sides of body. Size: to 22.5 cm.

Habitat: inshore, among boulders, rocks, stones and Cystoseira. Food: no data. Reproduction: no data. Hybridization: intergrades with N. cephalarges on Crimean and northern Caucasus coasts of Black Sea (Pinchuk, 1968).

Distribution: eastern Black Sea (southeast Crimea to Batum).
