Diagnosis: see genus. Dl VI; D2 I + 13 (13-14); A I + 11 (11-12); P 19-20 (18-20). Scales in lateral series 53-55 (48-57). Vertebrae 28 (27-28). Colour: head and body dark, with about 12 narrow, dark vertical bars, more or less defined; in young, sides of head with pale spots, and series of discrete dark blotches below lateral midline; dorsal fins with proximal rows of pale spots, and narrow light edge. Size: to 15 cm.

Habitat: intertidal pools. Food: no data. Reproduction: no data.

Distribution: eastern Atlantic oceanic islands (Madeira, the Canaries, and the Salvages; unconfirmed record from the Azores).

Eggs, larvae and young stages. No data.
