Accepted name: Gobius auratus Risso, 1810 (updated 2009-06-25)

Diagnosis: lateral line system with sub-orbital row d in two parts, row x1 ending anteriorly behind pore b and pore a behind eye on course of oculoscapular canal. Nape scaled, cheek naked. Anterior nostril with triangular lappet. Pectoral free rays moderately developed. Pelvic disc deeply cleft to middle, with membrane reduced, not more than one-fifth length of spinous ray in midline depth. Dl VI; D2 I + 14; A I + 13; P 19 (18-19). Scales in lateral series 43-45. Colour: canary yellow, without conspicuous cheek spots or lateral midline blotches; pectoral dark mark deeper than long, lacking posterior pale edge. Size: at least to 6.5 cm.

Habitat: deeper inshore waters, 15-80 m; above bottom, over rocks, with algae and gorgonians. Food: no data. Reproduction: no data.

Distribution: Mediterranean.

Eggs, larvae and young stages. No data.
Otoliths (sagitta). No data.

Note. The status of this form, relative to G. auratus Risso, needs further investigation.
