Diagnosis: dorsal finrays XII + 21; anal finrays II + 21; pectoral finrays 13; pelvic finrays I + 3. No teeth in front of canines. Colour: basically grey-bluish, rows of spots and short stripes on body. Spawning males dark brown or violet with bulb glands on spiny anal finrays. Size: to 20 cm.

Habitat: between pebbles or at margins of steep, filamentous, algaecovered rocks exposed to sunlight, at depths of 0.5-1 m. Behaviour: underwater 'flight' over long distances. Male and female occur together also outside spawning period. Food: almost exclusively algae. Reproduction: May-July.

Distribution: Mediterranean, Black Sea and Atlantic coast from Morocco to Loire, France.

Otoliths (sagitta). No data.

Note. Parablennius parvicornis (Valenciennes, 1836) may belong to this species, which will extend the distribution southward to Congo River.
