Diagnosis: dorsal finrays XII + 17; anal finrays II + 19; pectoral finrays 14; pelvic finrays I + 3. Colour: basic coloration grey-greenish, 7-9 olive or brown vertical bars. Spawning males yellow, red, brown, green or olive, with large orbital tentacles and bulb glands on spiny anal finrays. Size: to 63 mm.
Habitat: between algae in shallow, rocky, littoral areas, especially at walls at a depth of 0.5-1 m. Behaviour: males court by shaking and rearing up anterior part of body; females respond by displaying abdomen. Male leads female to resident hole for spawning. Rivals are threatened by yawning and fighting, including tail beating and biting. Food: bottom invertebrates, especially gammarids; also algae. Reproduction: May-August. Several females spawn into resident hole of one male which guards the eggs.
Distribution: Mediterranean, Black Sea and off Iberian Peninsula to Morocco and the Canaries.
