Diagnosis: females with least outside width between frontals 9.1-17.8% SL; illicial length 23.1-37.2% SL. D 12-14; P 15-18. Skin thin, easily torn. Males, juvenile females and larvae without concentration of subdermal pigment on caudal peduncle. Other characters in key.

Habitat: 1,000-3,000 m, rarely in lesser depths. Food, Reproduction: see suborder.

Distribution: all oceans. Northernmost record in Clofnam area 61° N.
