Diagnosis: females with illicial length 19-27% SL; esca with 2 pairs of conical, distal appendages, pointed or in some specimens blunt and partially fused, the anterior pair longest; a small appendage behind escal pore; barbel 90-276% SL, with unbranched stem with a distal tassel consisting of 4 proximal, short branches, each with numerous more or less stalked photophores, a short continuation of the stem which then divides in 3 short, compressed branches each with a series of photophores on outer edge. Males with well-developed sphenotic spines.
