Diagnosis (females): esca with low terminal papilla, a posterior filamentous appendage and (except in some juvenile specimens) filamentous, paired anterior and lateral appendages.

Habitat: adults probably benthopelagic. Food, Reproduction: see suborder.

Distribution: more than 30 specimens from tropical and subtropical waters of the Atlantic Ocean, and a single record from the East Chinese Sea; in Clofnam area, a single specimen from off Madeira.

Eggs, larvae and young stages. Uwate in MS, specimen of 18 mm SL, BMNH 1930.1.12.1101.
Otoliths (sagitta). No data.
