Diagnosis: a large fish with a long caudal peduncle. Upper attachment of axial, dermal flap opposite pectoral finrays 10-12. Dorsal finrays 5-7; anal finrays 4-6; pectoral finrays 21-25 (m = 23); caudal finrays 9-10. Length of disc 3.4-4.3 (m = 4.0) times in SL. Colour: highly variable; often 2 large red spots, 1 on each side of body near tip of pectoral fin. Size: to about 40 mm SL.
Habitat, Food, Reproduction: no data.
Distribution: Mediterranean from Adriatic Sea to Gibraltar and northwards to Trondheim, Norway and the Faroes.
