Diagnosis: head relatively short, 2.5-2.8 (m = 2.7) times in SL. Body depth 5.5-6.1 (m = 5.7) and disc length 3.6-4.6 (m = 4.1) times in SL. Dorsal finrays 5-6; anal finrays 5-7; pectoral finrays 21-24 (m = 22); caudal finrays 10-11. Colour: green with a darker mottling, or maroon spotted with mahogany, and large white dorsal spots. Adult male with a large black or purple spot on dorsal and anal fins and purple areas on throat. Size: to about 40 mm SL.

Distribution: Mediterranean and off European coast northwards to Scotland.
