Diagnosis: 9 or 10 free spines in front of the dorsal fin. No lateral keel on the caudal peduncle. Pelvic fin spine markedly serrated. Size: rarely exceeding 7 cm SL.

Habitat: fresh and brackish waters. Behaviour presumably similar to Gasterosteus aculeatus. Food: small invertebrates. Reproduction: male makes a nest in early spring.

Distribution: Iower Danube and rivers surrounding the Black, Caspian and Aral Seas.

Eggs, larvae and young stages. No data.
Otoliths (sagitta). No data.
