Diagnosis: orbit 3.5-5.8 in head length. Posterior nostril somewhat ahead of eye. Second dorsal finrays 47-50; anal finrays 38-42. Pyloric caeca 16. Size: to 123 cm SL.
Habitat: most specimens have been taken at about 2,000 m. Rare, solitary. Specimens have been caught with bottom trawls and set lines. Food: no data. Reproduction: no data.
Distribution: first described from Sagami Bay (Japan). Other examples tentatively identified as this species have been caught near the mouth of the Bay of Biscay and west of Ireland.
Eggs, larvae and young stages. No data.
