Diagnosis: head length about 11-14% of body length; snout with spiny scutes at tip, underside scaleless; mouth subterminal; chin barbel present, short; gillrakers (no data); branchiostegal rays 7. First dorsal fin with 12 finrays, the second finray a serrated spine; second dorsal fin beginning shortly behind or well behind anal fin origins, the finrays very short: nectoral fin with 16 finrays: pelvic fin with 11 finrays, its insertion well forward of pectoral fin base. Scales with slightly diverging rows of spinules. Pyloric caeca (no data). Colour: dark brown. Size: to over 20 cm TL.

Habitat: benthopelagic at 1,266-2,330 m. Food: no data. Reproduction: no data.

Distribution: the Azores, Madeira and off Morocco. Elsewhere, southward to Cape Verde Is.
