Diagnosis: head length about 15% of body length; snout with buttonlike tip of scutes with blunt spines, underside almost or completely scaleless; mouth subterminal; chin barbel over half eye diameter; gillrakers 7-9; branchiostegal rays 7. First dorsal fin with 12-13 finrays, the second finray a serrated spine; second dorsal fin beginning shortly behind or well behind anal origin, the finrays very short; pectoral fin with 18-22 finrays; pelvic fin with 11 finrays, its insertion well forward of pectoral fin base. Scales with slightly diverging rows of spinules. Pyloric caeca 8, short and simple. Colour: dark brown to black, mouth, gill cavity and peritoneum black. Size: to over 20 cm TL.

Habitat: benthopelagic at 860-1,430 m. Food: no data. Reproduction: no data.

Distribution: Atlantic, from Morocco to Portugal. Elsewhere, western Atlantic (Straits of Florida to Caribbean).
