Diagnosis: head moderate, about 15% SL; snout short and rounded, 26.3-28.9% head length; eye moderate, 23-28% head length; interorbital space wide, 21-25% head length; chin barbel present, longer than eye diameter. Pyloric caeca, 10-13. First finray of pectoral and pelvic fins very elongated, as also second finray of first dorsal fin (one and a half to two times head length); first dorsal fin with 9-11 finrays; pectoral fin with 14-16 finrays, its insertion a little before first dorsal fin origin; pelvic fin with 8 finrays, its insertion a little behind pectoral fin base. Scales without spinules, lateral line not strongly arched over pectoral fins. No light organ. Colour: body brownish, branchiostegal membrane and gill chamber black, a dark median stripe on gill lamellae. Size: to 30 cm TL.
Habitat: benthopelagic at 630-2,165 m. Food: small crustaceans. Reproduction: no data.
Distribution: Atlantic off the Azores, Madeira and Morocco northward to northern Portugal. Elsewhere, Western Atlantic (off eastern coast of Florida, Florida Strait, Gulf of Mexico, Caribbean).
Eggs, larvae and young stages. No data.
