Diagnosis: head fairly large, 15-20% SL; snout short and blunt, 22.6-27.3% head length; eye large, 26.8-31.6% head length; inter-orbital space narrow, 15-17% head length; chin barbel present, more than twice eye diameter. First finray of pectoral and pelvic fins elongated as filaments, as also second finray of first dorsal fin; first dorsal fin with 12-13 finrays; pectoral fin with 18-20 finrays, its insertion a little before first dorsal fin origin: pelvic fin with 8 finrays, its insertion a little behind pectoral base. Scales without spinules, lateral line not strongly arched over pectoral fins. No light organ. Colour: generally brown, fin membranes dusky, roof of mouth and gill chamber dark; light areas on branchiostegal membrane. Size: to at least 30 cm TL.
Habitat: benthopelagic at 550-1,105 m. Food: small planktonic crustaceans. Reproduction: no data.
Distribution: Atlantic off Morocco. Elsewhere, Caribbean (off Nicaragua).
