Diagnosis: body tapering to a long slender tail. Head bulky, about 15% SL; inter-orbital space 44-47% head length; snout pointed, 33-39% head length; eye small, 10-15% head length; mouth small, inferior, with bands of small pointed teeth in both jaws; small chin barbel present. Branchiostegal rays 7. First dorsal fin with 11-12 finrays, the second finray smooth, long and flexible; second dorsal fin not beginning close to first, the finrays much shorter than those of anal fin; pectoral fin with 16-19 finrays; pelvic fin with 9-10 finrays, inserted before origin of first dorsal fin. Swimbladder absent. Scales reduced to discrete rounded spiny buttons. Colour: generally brown, gill cavity and peritoneum black. Size: to over 40 cm TL.
Habitat: bentho- to bathypelagic at 5,000-5,413 m. Food: small bathybenthic crustaceans (amphipods, isopods), polychaetes. Reproduction: no data.
Distribution: Atlantic, along eastern side of Clofnam area (to east of Mid-Atlantic Ridge). Elsewhere, western Indian Ocean (north of Amirante Is.).
Eggs, larvae and young stages. No data.
